Second app

I have launched my second app yesterday. It is a quiz about capitals of the countries:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mary.jeanphilippe.capitale

I spent more time developing this one and added almost everything I wanted to.

I hope it will have the same success as the first one. My first app has been:

  • played in more than 90 countries
  • downloaded more than 700 times

And the trend is still positive. If you are curious about the earning: it is quite low and most likely it will never reimburse the money spent for having a google developing account.

Nevertheless, I am really proud of all the good comments I had and still have a lot of things to improve.

Bad experience with interstitial ads

The first ad I developed for my game was an interstitial one. Only later I added a banner and today I decided to keep only this one and delete the interstitial one. Below are the reasons:

  • First of all, the interstitial ad gives a really bad user experience: the ad is full screen, often asks the user to click somewhere and the close button is hided. A friend of mine showed me a very annoying ad he had when he was playing my game. To be honest if I see this sort of ad on an app I would immediately uninstall it.
  • I earned 1.21$ so far. I do not have enough data to be 100% sure about my conclusion but 0.20$ are from the interstitial ad and the rest from the banner.
  • A lot of uninstallations happened right after an interstitial ad was displayed.

To summarize, without interstitial ads my game will give a better user experience, will decrease the number of uninstallations and will not decrease significantly the earning.

New ideas

I am still working on the promotion of my first app. At the same time, I am trying to do 2 things:

  • Improving my flags quiz with:
    • more traductions
    • new points system with a timer that users would be able to share on twitter/Facebook and eventually showing the best score of the month/year. The last one would certainly require a server which could be expansive relatively to the 0.97$ I have earned so far.
  • Creating new apps. I thought about:
    • USA states quiz: it is not a really common app
    • Countries capitals quiz: extremely common but also really fast to develop because it would be really similar to my first app
    • Base converter (like from decimal to binary…): easy to do, not that common but unfortunately few people would download an app like this and also they would use it rarely.

I think having several apps could help for the promotion and also for understanding which app I should develop, which SEO/ASO I should use…

Amazon app store

I have just posted my app on the Amazon App Store. I am not sure people are really using it but at least my app is very well referenced on it.

I had a lot of downloads today but I am not able to tell if it is because of new posts on Reddit, my posts on Quora being quite successful or this launch on Amazon App Store.

Promoting my app

It’s been one week that I have launched my first app. Now I can tell how important it is to promote apps. I posted the link of my app page on several forums and it looks like it works. Today I had new players from Russia and India and people have played more. I hope it will continue.

The last thing I have done to promote my app is this video:

I speak french in this video, I did not feel confident enough with my english. But it is a good test to check how it can help.

I also thought about subscribing on a website for exchanging good reviews (fake reviews) with other developers. I decided I will not for several reasons:

  • It is not legal.
  • It could have led to my app being less well referenced because of google algorithm seeing to many good comments per downloads.
  • I want my app being downloaded for good reasons.

First app

I have just launched my first app this week. It’s a quiz about the countries flags, only available for android:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mary.jeanphilippe.drapeau

Today it has reached 25 users who are mainly (maybe only) friends. I feel like the number of users will not increase more. When I tried to search for my app in the google store, it was almost impossible to find it even when I typed the exact name of the my app.

Today, I posted my app’s link on several forums but I am not expecting it to help.

Time will tell…
